Your Questions About The Mother-daughter Book Club

Lisa asks…

Can you help me create a name for a blog about books?

I am passionate about children and young adult books and would like to start a blog about books and book clubs for that age group. As a volunteer, I oversee the book clubs at the local elementary school and am the coordinator for and member of a couple of mother-daughter book clubs. I attend children and young adult literature seminars. My blog would include recommended book lists (and links to the books), helpful tips for book clubs and books/book club information, in general. I need a creative, fun, catchy name! Thanks for your help

Donald asks…

Where do the mother/daughter in Joy Luck Club sit around the table? REALLY NEED HELP!!!!?

I need to know where the mother and their daughters sit in the maj john (or whatever its called) table. Do they sit in the North, East, South, or West area?

I can’t find it anywhere in the book, its supposed to be in the first section of the book.

richmama answers:

I just returned this book to the library.
Suyuan Woo (and then her daughter Jing-Mei Woo) sits at the Eastern side. (In response to the previous answerer – while the novel is based on truth, it is not an autobiography. Amy Tan is not in the story.)
I forget who else sat where, but it was near the end of the first chapter (Jing-Mei Woo: The Joy Luck Club), it’s mentioned just before Jing-Mei sits at the mahjong table with her mother’s friends.
Hope this helps.

Linda asks…

Is my mom going too far? What do I do?

She’s part of this book club with mothers, daughters, & their friends. Anyways she has thrown aside my dad to pursue a relationship with Edward or Jacob from Twilight, she is so obsessed she is considering divorcing my poor dad. She makes out with a cardboard cut out of edward & has a blow up doll looking like jacob. It’s totally creepy & gross when she fantasizes.

I’m a girl but I hate twilight, & not part of my mom’s book club or twihard orgy. I prefer reading other stories & movies. Anyways my dad is crying in the corner & getting drunk because his wife no longe loves him. What do I do?

richmama answers:

As someone else said, I think you have it backwards.
It sounds to me like your dad may have an alchahol problem. You’re mother can’t stand it and goes to bookclub. She gets obsessed with Twilight only because she can’t love your father anymore because he’s not himself when he;s drunk. Think of it…

Your mom may have a mental illness… I fogot what it’s called, but it’s when you either believe things that obviously aren’t true… And when you love something that is obvioiusly fake….

What you should od is talk to both of them, your Momma and your Dad.

If that doesn’t work…
Burn her books. You might get grownded, but it’ll help her obsession. It’ll help your parent’s marriage.

Good luck, hon.

John asks…

What are some love quotes relating to the sun?

What are some short, simple quotes relating to the sun (with the word “sun” preferably) about love, like something I can put on a Mother‘s Day card. (Not like a relationship love, but general love–daughter/mother) Thanks.

richmama answers:

I have modified these quotes to make it more like (general mother daughter love quotes) –

“I believe in my mom as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” – C.S. Lewis

“No matter how dark the night, somehow my mother, like the sun rises once again and all shadows are chased away” – David Matthew Click

“The moon’s an arrant thief,
And her pale fire she snatches from the sun.” – William Shakespeare

“The faults of my mom are like the sun and moon. They have their faults, and everyone sees them; they change and everyone looks up to them.” – Confucius

Chris asks…

Future mother-in-law sent my mom an email demanding to be included in wedding plans. How do I deal with this?

My FMIL sent an email to my mom yesterday stating that she “EXPECTS to go to all wedding dress scouting trips, wedding dress fittings, hair and makeup trials-in short anything that you and your daughter, my son’s fiancee will do as mother and daughter.” That is a direct quote from the email that FMIL sent my mom. My mom is highly insulted by this, because she and I had planned to do all the things listed as just the two of us. My mom feels and I told this to FH last night, that FMIL does not know her place as mother of the groom, that she is not mother of the bride and she does not get to do those things and does not have the right to expect that she will or to demand that she will be included like that. My mom sent FMIL back an email telling her that she had no right to make demands, especially since she was not paying for anything or had offered to pay for anything. And reminded FMIL that her son and I were having a traditional wedding whereby the bride’s parents are paying and hosting for it all. FH is mortified that his mom sent this email and has no idea why since his sister and his mom are very close-it is not like she is looking for a second daughter. FH is going to talk to his mom, but don’t you think FMIL is asking too much?

richmama answers:

Sounds like you inherited your good manners and selflessness from dear old mom.

A gracious bride would include the FMIL in all plans regardless of the money she is putting out.

I’m just sayin’.

Your Questions About Mother Daughter Bonding Network

Laura asks…

If someone’s mother steals $5,000 from them?

Say a woman’s daughter has a bond worth $20,000. The mother is in charge of her money until she is 25, and then the daughter will have control over it. The mother puts her daughter‘s money into an account that they share, there’s hardly ever any money in the account. The mother spends $5,000 of the money and the daughter finds out. She buys a bunch of stuff from Home Shopping Network in her name. The daughter wants to take her to court. Will the mom go to prison. or jail for months? The mom also tried to file for bankruptcy 5 years ago when she spent $100,000 she didn’t have too, but the judge or someone said they’d take away her house so she makes her husband pay for everything.

richmama answers:

If her name is on the account and she has access to it, its not stealing. Sorry.

While ethically horrible, not illegal. You could possibly go to civil court over it, but its not stealing or illegal

George asks…

Help us support friend who lost baby?

Friends daughter had a stillborn baby 2 yrs ago and is now preg with 2nd child to a diff father. Is understandably scared and has significant medical support in place owing to the risk of pregnancy (previous pre eclampsia life threatening.) Has told father of baby she has no feelings for him and has thus ended the relationship. Daughter who is 22 remains living at home and is dependant upon parents to accommodate however has small income from casual employment. Recently she told her mother that she was having second thoughts re separation from bf but later that night contacted him and said she want nil to do with him and not to contact her until after birth of child. Why is she lying all the time, she has been caught out on a few lies of late primarily about her relationship. Understandably the daughter is scared of loosing this child and as a result is having some difficulty bonding with unborn but is also pushing friends away and now only goes to work, medical appts and spends some time on social network sites. Father of baby devastated, how can we help? Some borderline personality traits of behavior presenting here is it because of the stress of the pregnancy?

Lisa asks…

Gossip – A Novel…What do you think?

I am writing a novel on the life of a soon-to-be star by the name of Rachel Pulaski, but goes by her “star” name, Rachel Rogers. her father, Vince MacLean, is in cheesy type tv shows “general hospital” and the 21st centuries “james bond” type actor. her mother, now divorced with Vince, is the happy-go-lucky type, not in the biz, but a musician for an independent folk ensemble with her new fiance, Luc Wildberry (fake stage name – Lawrence Williams), and pretty much leaves Rachel and her other daughter, Anna, to Vince and Veronica, Vince’s new wife. Veronica Meyers, the talk of the hollywood scene, has starred in many short french films, but is now changing over to the american dramas and Crime-thrillers. Now that Rachel knows she is destined to be a star, she has to overcome her dad’s reputation to become her own title and person. She lands a spot on the newest vampire-romance series, Sucks to be Me, on an ABC-like channel, ATN (america’s television network). But she soon finds herself offered jobs Angelina and Drew B. would die for! not to mention “innocent” 14-yea-old Anna is caught backstage kissing the shows leading man! here is the beginnging of the story. they are at their father’s movie premiere, Land of the Unspoken, a mystery…

The bright, pulsating wave of flashing camera bulbs exploded simultaneously, blinding me momentarily. But the sudden bursts of vivid white wasn’t an fraction of an iota of enough distraction to offset my picture-perfect smile. No wonder Teen Vogue and CosmoGirl! were yelling “Rachel! Rachel! Look over here!” and begging for interviews for next Friday. But though having a superstar, bona fide father is beyond the teen expectations, the aftermath of numerous red-carpet experiences can result in blood-shot eyes in the deepest shade of crimson you could imagine. Yet, I plastered on a faux grin and locked my arm through Dad’s, and looked like a was having the grandest time even though my Christian Louboutin pumps were digging into my pedicured-feet and my 2009 Versace tube dress was a quarter-inch too small around my barely-there stomach.

what do you think? questions or comments? by the way, its named Gossip – A Novel and the sequel is He Said, She Said. thanks!

richmama answers:

I don’t get the connection between acting on general hospital and in james bond films. The actors that fill these two roles are drastically different (can you picture Danial Craig in a soap?). Also, if Veronica Meyers is a french film star, give her a french name. For example: Vivienne or Myriam (put an accent on one of the e’s) and a last name that ends in an x or something (Molieux, for example). Just look at the list of actor’s names in the credits for ‘Amelie’.

Donna asks…

What do you think of this 3 O.C. men arrested in child sex crimes cases?

what is your open on these men and the girls involved also what do you think should be done

The Sexual Assault Felony Enforcement team, or SAFE, a multi-agency task force that investigates crimes against children, announced this morning the arrest of David Brown, 34, of Lake Forest; Richard Chaney, 23, Costa Mesa; and Brock Jackson, 21, of Rancho Santa Margarita.

Brown is accused of having a four-month-long sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl he met online.

Chaney is accused of having a 14-year-old girl engage in live video sex acts, and of later having sex with her. He is also accused of raping another woman who was unconscious.
Jackson is accused of possessing hundreds of videos and about 6,000 images of child pornography.

Chaney and Jackson are being charged in federal court.

Brown is being charged in Orange County Superior Court sex acts with a minor. He surrendered to authorities Wednesday, and is free on a $100,000 bail bond.

Brown came to the attention of law enforcement after he was found on a high school campus trying to talk to the girl, officials said. The investigation found that Brown had portrayed himself as a 22-year-old on a social networking Web site, and used the Internet to chat with high school girls, police said.

Chaney was arrested June 5 after the mother of a 14-year-old girl told authorities that her daughter had performed sexual acts in front of her Webcam for Chaney, and that Chaney had later slept with her, officials said.

A search of Chaney’s apartment uncovered a video of him having sex with an unconscious woman, said David Baroway, a special agent supervisor with the California Department of Justice.

Baroway said there were also other illegal videos in the apartment, but declined to say whether they involved Chaney.

In December 2008, Fullerton police were investigating a vehicle theft, and discovered that the man they suspected in that crime, Jackson, had child pornography on his computer, Baroway said.

The hundreds of videos and roughly 6,000 photos of child pornography included images of children who were “very, very young,” Baroway said.
lets not be offensive to the victims, if you have a heart put yourself in their shoes and think about how theyd feel after this, its really not helping for you to make snide remarks about the victims save it for the crimminals…

richmama answers:

Its sick, its horrible. These guys are the definition of scum and should be put in jail for 25 years so they get their s*** pushed in and then give em the death sentence. People like that should not be let out or just be given a bail amount for their actions. No matter how much the bail amount, the damage can never be taken away.

I feel sorry for those kids that have gone through this. Its sad

Your Questions About The Mother Daughter Book Club

William asks…

What story is about the changing of the Chinese generations, mother and Daughter?

I took a Terra Nova for this school, and in one section was a story about this lady and her family. How her mom and Pa moved to the states to get away from the Vietnam War. Well, the girl wrote a book about four old Chinese women, who had daughters. These four women survived the Vietnam War and had a little club, and their daughters found them kinda foolish(since the daughters were in a new generation). Well one of the women die and her daughter takes her place, finding out that is wasn’t really foolish, and that the group of women recieve a letter from her sisters(who she didn’t know about) in back in Vietnam.

I hope this is a good summery, thanks so much for all your answers!!

richmama answers:

I think you are talking about the joy luck club by Amy Tan. One difference from your account and this book is that the women are Chinese, not Vietnamese.

Joseph asks…

It was a book that was made into a TV movie. About a mother and daughter in a small town. The daughter ends up having an affair with her teacher. I think I remember her mother cutting off all of the daughters hair.

I’m just a bit stumped…

richmama answers:

It’s by Amy Tan. . . It probably isn’t worth your time thinking about. Her only piece worth reading is a memoir called “Fish Cheeks.”

Your Questions About Mother-daughter Bonding

David asks…

do (did) you treasure those mother-daughter bonding moments, for example through Hair ritual/care ?? ?

like brushing,combing,braiding,etc…

richmama answers:

Yes, yes and yes, though there weren’t that many times that I remember. Going all anthropological on you, many animal species spend hours every day grooming each other in their “family”. It’s totally bonding and leads to trust and communication if the talk is relaxed, not critical. Good foundation for later years when the daughter is in her teens and fighting for her identity – some rapport remains, memories of being loved, taken care of, knowing that the mother wants what’s best for the daughter.

Richard asks…

Why are mother-daughter bonds especially strong in Greek mythology?

richmama answers:

Well, mostly they are not. Mother-child bonds of any type were downplayed strongly in favor of the male as the real and only parent (look at the Orestia by Aeschylus). In medical writings, women were written as only being the vessel to nurture the seed of men, and contributing nothing but nutrition to procreation. Early people might have been matriarchal, but the classic Greeks were obsessively patriarchal.

In myth, you have Demeter refusing to bring spring to the world because her daughter has been stolen… Mother-daughter bonds could be seen as playing strong roles because of the aliention of both women from the politics and dominant culture of Greek society. Women were usually kept heavily segregated, more so in wealthier households.

But there are some examples of very strong mother-child bonds, mostly in Greek tradegy though, which keep in mind was written by men. In Euripedes’s “Medea”, Medea is strongly connected to her children, she touches them and smells them and is nearly driven mad at the thought of killing them, but her pride does win out and she kills them as revenge against Jason. Also, look at Hecuba and Andromache in Euripedes’s “Trojan Women” and “Hecuba”. Hecuba in “Trojan Women” is broken down completely at the losses of her children until she is reduced to a sobbing mass. Andromache must give up her only child to be flung from the walls of Troy. And in “Hecuba” Hecuba launches a vicious attack to avenge her dead son. Why are mother-child bonds (or portrayed as so…male writters writing about women, so this is not authentic female experience, but the male version of it) so important? Because children were what women in the Greek world were expected to do. If you were a wife in a fairly wealthy home, you weaved, tended the house, and made babies. Sometimes the mother actually cared for the child but other times she handed it over to a nurse/slave.

So when compared to Roman mother/child bonds (which were usually portrayed as non-existent, the mothers were very harsh and abrupt) then yes, the Greeks had strong mother/child bonds. Compared to many other cultures or the contemporary world…not that strong a bond.

Ruth asks…

How do you best announce an engagement to a mother that doesn’t seem accepting?

My fiance and I have been secretly engaged for a little over 8 months. He is a marine and is currently fighting over seas. While his family is thrilled and very accepting of our engagement, I have yet to tell my mother because she doesn’t seem to accept him and it’s hard for me to open up to her and let her know how I feel. I would love to tell her but how is it possible when we don’t have the typical mother-daughter bond?

richmama answers:

The longer you wait the harder it will be because even if your mother doesn’t approve she’ll hate the fact that you kept it secret – for such a long time – from her way more.

Tell her. Simple. My mum didn’t, i should say still doesn’t, like my fiance. But we told her anyway. And yeah it was hard and really awkward but at least now she’ll have a civil conversation with him and we told her about our engagement 2 years ago. Lol . Not married quite yet but it gets better. Truly it does. It doesn’t seem like it at all but if this is what you want then your mum has to know that and respect that. She can’t run your life for you. If you’re like me and your parents still thought of you as little and a baby then it is hard and may cause many arguments along the way. But one day you will look back and laugh and you will see all the progress you have all made.

Good Luck and congratulations to you both. I hope this goes how you want it to.
