I think I came into contact with two time travelers/ghosts today what do you think?

This afternoon before I caught my train home I was sitting on the side of a fountain outside of my train station, just smoking a cigarette. I saw an oddly paired couple walking down the street, not like a gf/bf couple, but just friends. The man was African American and looked about 70. He was wearing a brown tweed coat, brown trousers, a cheese cutter hat, and wayfarer reading glasses. The interesting thing was, all of the clothes definitely looked like they had come from the era of the first time they were fashionable (not twenty eleven hipster). He seemed quite skeptical of the world around him. The women he was with looked 25-30 and was very tall. She was wearing a white jumpsuit (like an actual tight space one) and had very short (but not trendy) almost white blonde hair. She was very confident and there was something extremely ether about her. The whole time they were walking down the street she was looking directly at only me and maintaining eye contact and he was just looking around at everything. I was thinking wtf so kind of looked away and thought if I avoided her they wouldn’t come towards me. However she still did and asked me “Do you have any coins for me so that I can catch the bus”. She had a very knowing look on her face, and no distinguishable accent whatsoever. I was a bit taken aback and said “No sorry I forgot my eftpos card today” while nervously laughing. I then added “Oh and my coins” but she just chuckled as they walked straight off. Okay so your probably thinking… yeah and ??right now but the weird thing was: They only approached me. They only looked at me as if I was the only one they could see or the only one that could see them. And no one around payed them any attention as if they weren’t there or even looked at them at all considering how out there they were dressed. And it was almost as if she didn’t really need the money, they just approached me to see if I actually could see/hear her.
Don’t call me crazy, and I am not on crack, but I am a piscess and very intuitive/ strong connections with paranormal world. I almost feel as if these two people were time travelers or ghosts. What do you think.

The fact that you are asking this question is pretty telling. . . It definitely isn’t a good sign. It isn’t good that he can’t take criticism well- of course no one likes to be criticized but it is important for people to be able to listen to the feedback that other people give them and it sounds like he just reacts defensively. It also isn’t a good sign that he is so evasive about his past and his personal life. He doesn’t need to tell you everything, but in my experience these are signs of people who have trust issues and who are hiding something. He sounds like he demands a lot from you, but isn’t giving you back a lot in terms of trust and honesty. He may spend money but that won’t make up for the emotional toll he could take.
Overall, it is easy to judge someone from outside the relationship but in my opinion this guy has way too many issues and you are going to end up hurt, and it seems like a part of you already knows that.

Is breaking Islamic dress code laws more haram than smoking?

Clearly smoking is bad for you (an intoxicant like alcohol) therefore haram (forbidden) by the Koran.

Fact: cigarettes are freely on sale in Saudi Arabia and men puff away happily wherever you go.

Is it something to do with the fact that mainly men smoke and any attempt to ban cigarettes would be met with fierce opposition.

Yet any attempt to relax the laws on women‘s clothing is also met with fierce opposition and often offending women are severely punished (cf recent Sudan trousers arrests).

So which is more haram: smoking or the sight of hair?

Now Muslims: tell us how you expect to be taken seriously when these kinds of inequalities are plain for everyone to see?

I don’t think smoking *is* haram. It’s not mentioned in the Qur’an and as an intoxicant it’s on a par with caffeine, which is widely used in many Muslim cultures.

Try cutting expenses.
This is easier than you might think.
If you eat out everyday, try eating out 2 a week and taking your lunch on the other days.
Do you really need 300 cable channels?
If not cut your cable lineup alittle
Can you switch to a NO interest credit card (I just got one from bank of america 1800 732 9194 and they gave me a no interest free transfer)
Can you have a garage sale or sell a few things that you dont use anymore on ebay.
$100 a month (which is not unrealistic) would put a HUGE dent in your credit cards if you were able to apply that on top of what you are already paying.

The most important thing is YOUR DESIRE!
Since you have that, the rest is EASY and you can do it~
GOOD LUCK~

what will pay off a credit card faster? $50 a month on 9% or $100 a month on 23%?

i have just successfully paid off a credit card! (yay for me!) but i have more to go all ranging in interest from 1.9% to 24% the one i just paid off was 24% with a small balance. now here’s my question. i paid $50 a month on that card like clockwork every month even though my payment was only supposed to be $15. i’m now used to spening $50 a month on this bill. i have another card offer for a fixed rate of 8.99 %. should i get this card and transfer a small amount from one of my high interest cards (like $300 at a time) and pay $50 a month on that to pay off each transfer in about 6-7 months and keep repeating it till done with my goal(i won’t use this card for anything else). or should i just take that $50 and add it to another existing card to make that payment $50 higher? i would still continue to pay all my other cards on schedule (and i always pay a little extra on each one as best as i can) i have approx $22K in credit debt on various cards thanks to my ex-hubby. i make 30K/yr!

richmama answers:

Myself, I like to get rid of the smaller-debt cards first, because it makes me feel like I am getting somewhere with my debt. It also allows me to snowball the payments to the next card. So if I had three cards at $300, $600 and $900, I would go in that order for paying them off, regardless of the interest rate. I would continue making payments to the larger balances (minimum payment), then I would take the extra payment from the card before and apply it to the payment going to the larger one. This is what works for me. Because if I were to try and tackle the $900 one first I may fall off track. So getting some “quick wins” works for me.

What is the fastest way to pay off credit card debts other than consolidating them?

I have heard that paying the highest interest rate card off first is the best way, but I have also heard that paying the lowest amount off first is the best way. I’m open for suggestions , thanks.

richmama answers:

Start with the highest interest rate card or the card with the lowest balance–whichever you prefer. Only pay the minimum on the rest of the cards. Any extra cashflow should go to paying off the chosen card. Once it’s paid-off, snowball the money that was going to that card to the next card you choose to pay off…and so on, and so on. By choosing the highest interest rate card first, you obviously are eliminating the most wasted money being spent on interest; however, sometimes it’s a smarter move to start with the smallest balance so you feel as though you’re accomplishing something and don’t become discouraged. On that same note, it is important not to put every extra penny onto paying off the cards. You MUST leave yourself a little “fun” money or you WILL become discouraged and throw in the towel. Good luck! You can do it! It’s worth it!!!

Is it better to pay off revolving debt at a low rate or installment debt at a higher rate?

Let’s say you have a student loan at 8 percent and credit card debt at a fixed 3.99 percent. Conventional Wisdom says pay off the higher rate debt first. But, I have read that paying off credit card debt faster improves your credit score, which can save you thousands on a mortgage. So is it better to pay off the lower rate credit card debt and improve the credit score, or the higher rate debt and save the immediate money on interest.

richmama answers:

I’d say if you were buried, then ya, pay off a smaller one first just to get momentum going. However, your openess to approaching this situation and manner about doing so indicates that you might not need that added “ego” boost.

That said, most people would say (and as you say, conventional wisdom too), pay off your highest rate debt first and work your way down. At 3%, you could put that money in cds, etc, and earn 5%. Keep the 3% debt unless you have excess cash. Pay the 8% stuff off first. Once complete, that’ll allow you to get more debt at favorable rates as well.

I work with the tube on so I wasn’t paying perfect attention, but I got the impression it’s not good or worth it or something like that. You know you will have to pay the credit card fee’s that are usually around 3% depending on the card, Amex being the most around 3, in any event on any card purchases, because Uncle Sam isn’t going to take it in the shorts, and that’s for sure.

richmama answers:

DO NOT PAY ONLINE. DO NOT ALLOW THEM ACCESS TO YOUR CHECKING ACCOUNT OR ANOTHER CREDIT CARD.

You need to write a letter documenting the debt as paid in full with this money order or cashiers check. Put any other related documents from the collector/card company with the letter (such as the card company or collector specificing that the payoff amount).

Send it certified, return reciept (green postcard attached to the back of envelop). You will want to send a photo copy version (certified/return receipt also) to the credit card company also.

Make photocopies of everything- money order, letter, envelop, return receipt before it was sent), keep your money order receipt with it.

Keep the return receipt card stapled to your photocopies so if another collector calls someday you will have proof of payment.

Pay off high interest or lowest balance first?

I’ve heard a lot of conflicting information regarding paying off credit card debt. Is is easiest to get credit card debt paid off faster by paying off your highest interest credit cards first, or your lowest balances first?

richmama answers:

I would agree with the first answerer when he says that mathematically, it makes sense to pay of the highest interest first. However, math doesn’t always work. Getting out of debt is more about psychology and behavior rather than math. Paying off smaller accounts first creates mental momentum. Getting a quick success makes you hungry for more. Plus it frees up monthly money which you can roll over onto bigger accounts.

a) catch up on all of our monthly bills
b) pay off all three high interest credit cards
or c) pay off half of our medical bills that are in collection agencies (We will only get enough to cover half)

Which option is the best? We want to pay off our debt in the fastest, most efficient way.

richmama answers:

Catch up on your rent first. It wouldn’t matter much about the other debts if you are homeless. If there is a chance your car will be undriveable pay to have it repaired or buy a used car. If you mean utilities etc. By catching up on monthly bills that should be your second priority. Again you need lights and water right now. If you still have the money pay off all your credit cards or at least down to 35% of the credit limit..that looks best on your credit card. Do not to continue to use them or you’ll be right back where you started. Having credit cards maxed out, the bill is up to the credit limit, will go against your credit.

richmama answers:

You need to dispute the debt with all 3 credit bureaus. You can go online to equifax, transunion & experian to do this. It does take awhile though 30-45 days. The credit bureau will try to contact the creditor to verify debt owed. If they can’t they are required by law to delete the account from your credit. Good luck!

How to pay off credit cards enrolled in a debt management program?

I have been in a debt management program with a local credit counseling service for about 8 months. My parents have offered to co-sign a loan so I can pay off the cards. The loan with the bank is a lower interest rate than the cards and will pay them off faster with a lower payment each month. Should I pay the cards directly or go through the credit counseling service? Which is better for my credit score?

richmama answers:

The Credit Counseling company will probably get you a better price in the long run because they will negotiate a lower rate than you can. But, you are being charged a very large amount of compounded interest on every dollar that you owe them for every Month that the amount is owed. Let Mom and Dad help IF the interest rate and terms are better than you are currently paying the credit card companies. And, if you can afford to pay all of your bills iccluding that payment. Remember that the credit counselor is making money on you, they will not always counsel you to your advantage.

What are little things you can do to save money?

richmama answers:

I don’t understand what living “green” has to do with saving money or being on a tight budget. As a matter of fact, in many ways living “green” is more expensive than living otherwise as you point out when buying organic food. Alternative “green” sources of energy are typically twice as expensive as traditional sources.

As far as having a tight budget, I have always lived under a tight one whether I needed to or not. During “good” times I would save more and during tough times save less. But I always tried to save. The key is not to buy things you really don’t need and not to live extravagantly unless you deserve it and can afford it. Buy things you only truly need and buy them on sale.

As far as living “green” it’s OK to conserve and use less energy. Turn the thermostat back, drive less and more efficiently carefully planning your trips, use only fuel efficient cars. But solar power, wind power, ethanol, organic foods, etc. Will all cost you more than traditional products.

Will I save money doing the prep work for new tile and carpet?

Hi all. My husband and I live in an 1100 sq/ft house with two bedrooms, 1 bathroom, 1 hallway, a laundry room, small kitchen and big living room. We want to have the whole house tiled with carpet in the two bedrooms. When our puppies were growing up they discovered the worn holes in the old carpet and decided to make them bigger, tearing into them like an Easter Ham. (The house is about 26 yrs old and the carpet is at least 10 yrs old)

We are on a budget and are looking for options to save money on installation and materials. We are looking at tile and carpet that costs about $1 per sq/ft and would like to get it installed by someone.

1) Would we really save money doing prep work ourselves? How much would this entail?: Im imagining pulling up the old carpet, pulling out the wood bits and nails, clearing out all the furniture, sweeping… cant think of what else. Is it worth the savings?

2) How much would it be to get it installed? We live in Bakersfield, CA.
BTW thats tile throughout the house and carpet in the two bedrooms (not carpet tiles)
We have thought about doing it ourselves. Maybe we need to revisit that. We have both laid tile before but not carpet. Id rather leave that to professionals cos I dont know it. The main reason why we wanted to get it installed is because it is the whole house not just one room and 5 professionals can come in and do it a lot faster and easier than my husband and I ever could. It would take us weeks and weeks. But maybe we can get relatives to help.

richmama answers:

Unfortunately there isn’t a whole lot of labor involved in pulling up carpet, so you really won’t save much. If you do pull up the carpet leave the tack strips in the bedroom where you are having carpet put down. Also wear a mask old carpet can be bad when pulling up. I did it once in a rental house I was fixing up to sell, just to get rid of the smell. I saved a whole hundred bucks minus trip to dump. Depending on the quality you looking at 2-4 dollars a ft. For carpet and about the same for tile especially if you want a diamond or brick pattern laid down

How can I save up to study overseas for a year?

Any tips for saving money would be great. I study full-time, work casually as a waitress 2-3 shifts per week, more in the uni holidays, and teach piano as well.

richmama answers:

If you enjoy teaching piano, could you increase the number of lessons you give? The rate per hour is likely to be more than the waitressing. I know one person who had part time work on Saturdays but gave it up because he was earning much more from a full Saturday teaching music. And he did this right through uni.

If you can live on what you earn from waitressing, save every penny from the piano. There are lots of ways of cutting down yhour expenses. Google ‘Oprah Debt Diet’ for examples.

How to save money in this economy?

Unfortunately most of the people today worrying about the economy, sky rocketing gas prices and the cost of living, I think very simple things can have a big impact on our budget for instance using coupon each day you go for shopping. Anytime you can find a coupon for a product that you use, clip it and take it along on your next shopping trip. Some stores even offer double or triple coupon days once a month. Find out if your local store offers this service and check the newspapers you can save a lot in a month.

In addition to the above I would also recommend putting any long term savings in a physical asset that will retain its value like gold or silver or other commodities, things you could potentially use for trade. Inflation will render cash or bank savings worthless.

Simply dont wear yur jeans so tight in the waist. I personaly dont care for jeans that are so tight they look like someone painted them on your legs and every thing bulges anyway. No matter how skinny you are, it happens if you but them a little bit too small.

If you have the time and energy, get a personalized photo album and fill it with photos of them – that is my favorite idea of the moment.. Otherwise, surprise them.. Have some flowers or food (chocolates, sausage, etc..) delivered. Take them out to somewhere they used to take you (restaurant, museum, etc..) Things with memories are the best. If you don’t want to take the time to relive and document the past though, just make some new memories! I’ve put together a page on gift giving if you’d like a look at some other suggestions. There are plenty of ideas for under $45. I’ve put my site in the sources.

richmama answers:

I think my all time favorite gift was a photo collage (poster size) made and framed by my daughter when she was about 16-17. She gathered photos from throughout my life then had each of her siblings and her Dad (my husband) write “something special from their heart” on a colored piece of paper. She incorporated the photos (probably near 100) and notes into the collage. I cried (happy tears) for a few hours that day. I have it proudly displayed in my home office where I still look at it often. I’m hoping she’ll make me another one someday updating my life in photos.

You could incorporate the same idea into photos of you and your friend (including other friends, trips, pets, etc.) and then write little notes with “memories”, “inside jokes”, etc. And scatter them throughout the collage.

Good Luck!

If you buy an audiobook on itunes, does it read the real book almost word by word or miss out loads?

Does it miss out the little things in books that are enjoyable? Theres a book thats 3 hours and 15 mins long and I don’t think the actual book could be read that quickly.

richmama answers:

Hi there,

Usually, it doesn’t. “Remember me” is a rather short novel, I finished it in a little under three hours, so it is perfectly possible that the audiobook is that short.

If it says “abridged”, it will be shorter than the original. “Unabridged” versions are not shorter than the novel.

Be sure to listen to the preview, though. Readers’ voices are not all alike, and you have to like the voice. I bought an audiobook once without doing that, and I detested the voice of the reader.

Cheers
S

Edit. Just looked into iTunes. The unabridged version is almost thirteen hours – either I am a very quick reader, or the text version I had was abridged…

3 questions in one. Books, Hair & Itunes.?

Okay first question about Itunes.
Yesterday, i had a friend over, and since she has dial up and no itunes on her cmputer, she asked me, with high speed and itunes to download my songs on her ipod. But when i plugged her ipod in, it said i needed to download Itunes 8.0 + to acutaly beable to put songs on her ipod .. so i deleted the itunes out of my system. No where was it found. I went on www.apple.ca and downloaded itunes, it popped up on my desktop but when i clicked on it it said:
The Itunes application could not be opened. A required iTunes component is not installed. PLease repair or reinstall Quick Time (-42404) . So i did that, he popped up on my desktop, but when i clicked on itunes , it still said the same thing. So i redownloaded itunes and another time for quick play, but it still wouldnt work. I restarted my computer, thinking maybe that would help but it didnt. So i left it for a day, so today, i went on and clicked itunes it still said it wouldnt work. I also have my ipod plugged in but it still wont work.
What should i do, because i really need to put some new songs on my ipod?!

Hair:
My hair is naturally puffy and wavy. I wash my hair at night, and leave it for morrning, because it when i lay down on it, it flattens it some. When i straighten it, my left side of my head straigtens perfectly, but my right side has a piece THAT WILL NOT STRAIGTEN, no matter what i do, i’ve let my straigtner mingle on that bunch of hair, but yet it still flips out MAJOR. Can anyone help. And i have a conair infiniti straitning iron. Pleaaaaaaase help.

Books;
Have anyone of you guys read any Sarah Dessen books? Well i’ve read a couple and i just wanted to know if you guys like Sarah Dessen like the way i do. My favorite book was ‘ The truth about forever ‘. It was an amazing book,. and it changed my life. I’ve also read, Just listen, and i’m currently reading ‘ Dreamland.’ .. Which is your favorite book of hers, and which have you read. And why is that favorite your favorite, what makes it so special?

Thanks for reading all this if you did, i know it’s pretty long , and lots of spelling mistakes but i’m in a hurry. Thanks once again ! (:

richmama answers:

ITunes- I have no idea, sorry. Have you definitely uninstalled it and not just deleted it?

Hair – I had that problem! Then I realized my Straighteners weren’t on a high heat. So I turned the heat up on them then they straightened that stupid piece of hair at the back. Once you’ve washed it why don’t you dry it with a hairdryer, making sure you’re keeping it as straight as possible so it is easier to straighten? Then use a straightening serum and slowly straighten that strand of hair – slow and gentle – but then if that doesn’t work, why don’t you experiment with your hair?
Change some of your hair around, like making it messy or curling it so you don’t notice the random sticky up bit.

Books- I haven’t actually read any of her books. I think I might look for ‘The truth about forever’ though, if it seems to have changed your life! I like Jodi Piccoults books…

Sorry I had pants answers haha.
